iPhone 8 price: how much does it cost?

The iPhone 8 starts at $1,079. This is more or less what we were expecting and is the same price-tag that the iPhone 7 had prior to the announcement of the newer model (last year's model has now dropped to a starting price of $849, if you're interested).

The $1,079 price tag is for the 64GB model, the smaller of the two. The 256GB iPhone 8 will set you back $1,329 but we wish there was a model in between. It could be worth waiting for Australia's Black Friday sales to roll around and (hopefully) knock down the prices on Apple's newest handsets.

The best iPhone 8 plans (October 2017)

While there will always be hordes of people keen on rushing out to grab the latest handset outright, a good amount of us will still want to wait for a reasonable contract plan to score our latest Apple prize. Based on our comparison of the major networks, these are the best iPhone 8 plans at the moment.

Best overall value — iPhone 8 64GB | 16GB data | Unlimited calls and texts | $93 pm

The competition for the best value iPhone 8 plan is strong, particularly as all the networks try and win you over at launch, but Virgin Mobile takes the cake this time. For only $93 a month, you'll nab 16GB of data and unlimited local calls and texts, along with $300 to spend on international calls and texts and a one-off 15GB package that rolls over if you don't use it all at once. Hurry though, this offer ends October 11. Total cost over 24 months is $2,232.

Best budget option - iPhone 8 64GB | Unlimited calls and text | 2GB data | $69 pm

Until October 11 you can score a seriously sweet deal on the iPhone 8 with Virgin Mobile. Not only will you end up with 2GB of data each month (a beefy amount for the lowest price tier), you'll get a one-off bonus of 10GB to use, and it rolls over to the next month if you don't use it. Beyond this, you'll also grab $50 worth of international calls and texts, streaming from Spotify, Google Play Music and more won't count towards your streams, and your precious unused data will roll over to the next month. Total cost over 24 months is $1,656

Best big data option — iPhone 8 256GB | Unlimited local and international calls and texts | 100GB data | $135 pm

Optus was already ahead of the pack when it came to big data, but with the release of the iPhone 8, the carrier's gone even harder and offered its 100GB for $40 off (but only if you grab the contract before October 26). This leaves you with unlimited local and international calls and texts, unlimited international roaming calls, 1.5GB of roaming data per month, and a host of Optus exclusives like Optus Sport and National Geographic. Total cost over 24 months is $3,240

Now let's break down the best iPhone 8 deals for each network in October 2017

Best iPhone 8 plans on Telstra (October 2017)

Best value overall — iPhone 8 64GB | Unlimited local and international calls and texts | 20GB data | $109 pm

If you go with the iPhone 8 on Telstra's $99 Go plan, you get an impressive 20GB of included data and the best of the premium carrier's perks. Unlimited local calls and texts as well as to 15 eligible countries, a free 6-month subscription to Apple Music with the music streams not counting towards your data cap, and you'll get a free 12-month subscription to one of Foxtel Now's starter packs. Total cost over 24 months is $2,616

Best budget option — iPhone 8 64GB | Unlimited calls and texts | 2GB data | $89 pm

Frankly, we don't recommend going with Telstra if you're after a wallet-friendly plan as Optus and Virgin both offer more value at the lower end, but if you're in need of this carrier's particular network, the least you'll be paying is $89 a month. This will get you 2GB of data, unlimited local calls and texts, and streaming from Apple Music won't count towards your cap. Total cost over 24 months is $2,136

Best big data option — iPhone 8 256GB | Unlimited local and international calls and texts | 60GB data | $139 pm

While Telstra now offer a massive 100GB plan, the carrier is putting a huge discount on its 60GB plan at the moment that makes it far superior in value, and still nets you more data than you'll know what to do with. Alongside the 60GB, you'll get unlimited calls and texts to 15 eligible countries, a 12-month subscription to three Foxtel Now starter packs, unlimited international roaming talk and text, and 2GB of roaming data to use each month. Total cost over 24 months is $3,096

Best iPhone 8 plans on Optus (October 2017)

Best value overall — iPhone 8 256GB | Unlimited local calls and texts | 14GB data | $108 pm

Optus are offering a pretty decent price on the otherwise quite expensive iPhpne 8 256GB model. For $108 a month, you'll nab 14GB of data, unlimited local calls and texts, 300 minutes of international calls to selected countries, and Optus Sport and National Geographic inclusions. This much data is only available at this price until October 26. Total cost over 24 months is $2,592

Best budget option — iPhone 8 64GB | Unlimited calls and texts | 1GB data | $75 pm

Although weighing in much cheaper than Telstra's best budget option, Optus still doesn't compete with Virgin Mobile for the best low-cost plan, but if you're keen on this network and all it has to offer (such as Optus Sport and National Geographic) then $75 a month is the price of entry. Unlimited local calls and texts come standard but with only 1GB of data, you'll be happy that your Spotify, Google Play Music, and iHeartRadio streaming won't count towards your cap. Total cost over 24 months is $1,800

Best iPhone 8 plans on Vodafone (October 2017)

Best overall value — iPhone 8 64GB | Unlimited local calls and texts | 16GB data | $94.95 pm

The best option from Vodafone at the moment if you're after an iPhone 8 is to go with the $50 Red Data plan and score yourself 16GB of data for just shy of $95 a month. This is pretty decent value and, if you're not happy with the deal in a few months time, you can pay off the remaining value of the handset and leave your contract on any given month. Total cost over 24 months is $2,278.80

View this deal at Vodafone

Best budget option — iPhone 8 64GB | Unlimited local calls and texts | 2GB data | $74.95 pm

Vodafone is offering a fairly competitive entry-level plan although it doesn't compete with Virgin Mobile's entry-level offer, but if you're keen to go with this network then 2GB is a decent amount of data and you get the perk of non lock-in contract. Total cost over 24 months is $1,798.80

Best big data option — iPhone 8 256GB | Unlimited local calls and texts | 42GB data | $135.37 pm

Although Vodafone currently has a plan with a few extra GB, the jump in price isn't worth the extra 8GB you'll be getting. So until October 17, the $80 Red Data plan is the best go, with 42GB of included data and unlimited local calls and texts. Total cost over 24 months is $3,248.88
